Summer Book Club 2010

I hope you found encouragement over the summer. Sorry this didn’t take off the way we would have liked. Thanks to all who did participate and to Claudia for trying it. I have finally really begun the study and am refreshed by the Word of God and the way they emphasize our attitude toward making changes.

Today the quote on pages 48-49 about the idea that God is good was useful to me in thinking about why we behave the way we do. If our motivation is other than our good and God’s glory, real and lasting change will not take place. We will be constantly struggling to stay motivated and can easily be thrown off by the slightest set back or distraction, as in most cases of legalism the work will be on us and will end badly. But when we remember God’s goodness we are led to His grace. We can repent, return and regain our standing as daughters of a loving God who knows us and has made us and provides good things for us, the best of which is the life, death and resurrection of His beloved Son. Our motivation is then gratitude which is a much healthier perspective than rule following. Blessings!

A quick question after perusing the book and studying the first two days of Week Two. Does this blog take the place of face to face meetings? Also, the exercise and menu sections listed at the back of the book, are they solo journeys or should we expect a group kickoff?

      Hi Sherry,

We’re working on a kick off, of sorts. But I don’t think there will be weekly meetings face to face so I set up this blog to keep us in touch with each other and what we’re discovering so that when we do meet face to face we can continue our on-line discussions. Does that help?

I just received another book. Now Kim Allen and Kathy Sinni will have books. I took the first week’s shopping list to the store and found it a bit cumbersome. I will admit that my first thought about a Boston cream pie smoothie was if I’m going to make a pie why would I put it in the blender. Is anyone doing the meal plan? How is it working?

    Thanks, Amy

I don’t know anyone doing the meal plan. Mostly we are doing the Bible study and discussion and then we have personal goals we turn in (on forms in back of book) and exchange by drawing one out each week (prayer partner)and then other prayer requests we share with the entire group. We could probably use a review of what are the “principles”. We are not sure we ever covered that as a group.

    thanks,
    Bonnie

Sorry I missed the conference call this evening. I wanted to update all that the painting projects are progressing well and things are moving along. My patience has grown and so has my continual desire to know stop and ask God what to do with this situation… how to best nurture worship of him in this moment with this child… and he has given me quite a few insights. The first is that 5 year olds don’t understand time and to try and rush them is only frustrating for all involved.

I didn’t get to workout- a down side to painting the basement, but I shouldn’t use it as an excuse. I have been watching my diet though… better than any summer before! Yet, plenty of room for improvement.

Thanks for the prayers and hope you will all continue to do well.

Thanks Jessica. I think painting IS a workout! I know what you mean about kids (of any age) and time. Glad you’re doing well with watching what you eat. Good for you! We missed you. Did you try to log in?

  7. Bonnie says:

Congratulations Jessica, that’s wonderful to hear about the painting and the patience.

my glasses still have not come in. On Friday they told me the middle of the week, the lenses were done and they still had to put them into the frames up in a lab in NY City.
My head cold/sinus infection is done I think, my weight seems to be staying the same but I lost 6 lbs in May. I probably need to give up corn on the cob. Old Weight Watchers used to count corn on the cob as a bread rather than a vegetable. and some summers I had NO corn on the cob. However, I don’t want that strict control so its going to take longer. Last night I spent about 25 mins on treadmill, and 10 on elliptical and 6 or so on the bike.
If its raining I may go back to gym tonight. If its not raining Amy Hudson may be coming over to help me with some projects with the electric drill. blessings,
    Bonnie
